The 6.6 Liter Duramax Diesels were a completely new overhead valve, 4 valves per cylinder engine design that featured direct injection, a turbocharger and aluminum cylinder heads engineered in high swirl designs. These Duramax Diesels' features marked a turning point in General Motors diesel technology as the Duramax Diesels established the company as a leader in North American diesel engineering. The Duramax Diesels had improved cooling characteristics over earlier General Motors diesel engines and were more reliable and more powerful.
